Summer Olympics Officially Underway. Go! Canada! Go!

By Julian DiBattista, 28 July 2012

After an exciting and heartwarming opening ceremonies, the 2012 Summer Olympic Games are officially underway.

Athletes from all over the world have united under the Olympic flag to showcase the very best in amateur sport.

It is important to note that these games mark a very important event from a human rights perspective.  For the first time in Olympic history, every country participating in the 2012 Summer Games is represented by both male and female athletes.  Given the attitudes towards women that exist in some parts of the world, this is a remarkable accomplishment and a step forward that will hopefully lead the way to a future Olympics where every country's Olympic team includes at least 1 out LGBT athlete.

When I was watching the opening ceremonies last night, it brought a smile to my face when I saw how Team Canada was received by the crowd at Olympic Stadium in London.  While, the loudest ovation was understandably reserved for Great Britain's Olympic team, it's good to know that the secound loudest response was received by Team Canada.

I'd like to wish the best of luck to all the athletes, coaches and officials representing Canada in London.  Play safe, hard and fair.

Go! Canada! Go!
